100 Years of First Airmail - Miniature Sheet (CSJ19MS)

$2.75
Description

Altogether, 364 pieces of mail are thought to have been carried on the first airmail flight from different stages along the route from the United Kingdom to Australia via Singapore. Eleven covers have been identified as originating from Singapore by the stamps used, the back address or the letter enclosed. Two covers are thought to bear Straits Settlements stamps. One is featured on the $2 stamp. This cover is unique in that it bears the stamps of 10 countries and is addressed to Ross Smith, the aviator’s, mother. The 60cents stamp shows one of the neatest covers from Singapore. It bears, on the back of the cover, The Borneo Company Limited Singapore logo. This identifies the origin of the cover. The front of the cover bears the special stamp inscribed “First Aerial Post 12 Nov – 10 Dec 1919, England to Australia”.
