A hawker centre or food centre refers to a collection of stalls selling different types of affordable foods, housed in a covered, non-air-conditioned open complex, with a common seating area for customers. Quality hawker food and a hygienic environment continue to draw crowds. They are also typically found near public housing estates, usually with adjourning wet markets, or transport hubs (such as bus interchanges or Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) stations). It is one of the places that is highly representative of the Singapore culture and lifestyle, as well as an important place for social interaction and family bonding. With a reputation for eating as a national pastime, it is a common sight to see Singapore residents and tourists alike patronising their favourite hawker stalls across the island.
