Description

The Singapore River occupies an important place in the history of Singapore. Following the establishment of a British trading post on the island in 1819, Singapore’s free port status and strategic location attracted trade and people from the region and beyond. Visual records of Singapore in the 19th century often depict the river as the focal point of commercial activity and urban development. This stamp issue showcases some early artistic impressions of Singapore River, from the National Library Board’s rare book collections at the National Library.
