This issue of stamps commemorates the Games of the XXXII Olympiad, more popularly known as the 2020 Summer Olympic Games. To be held in Tokyo, Japan from 23 July to 8 August 2021, it has kept its 2020 Games moniker after the global coronavirus pandemic made it the first edition to be postponed in the Olympics’ centuries-long history.
COVID-19, though, portends a Games with an atmosphere quite different from others before. New health and safety protocols for delegates and fans alike may dampen celebrations or hamper alliance-building, but what is certain is that the long-standing Olympic values of excellence, respect and friendship will prevail.
